Antibacterials for Pet Hygiene Products

Jun 22, 2005

Arch Biocides is expanding its global leadership position in human health & hygiene products to the pet products' sector. Arch provides active ingredients and related services for manufacturers of consumer products, which provide antibacterial and other treatment characteristic that promote health, safety and well-belling. Arch is building on this position of strength and knowledge to support the development of innovative pet hygiene products, which are compliant with applicable legislation and regulations.

Pet hygiene products are becoming increasingly important, with a recognised increase in the number of harmful bacteria and viruses that can be carried by pets, particularly cats and dogs, which can then transmit disease to humans. To help combat these diseases, known as Zoonoses, there is a need for antibacterials that meet the key criteria of efficacy (activity against target organisms), acceptable safety risks to the animal and its carer, and ability to be incorporated into a range of convenient-to-use products.

This need applies not only to the development of new products, but equally to the re-formulation of existing products, a change potentially forced upon product manufacturers due to changing legislation, as being seen currently in Europe with the implementation of the Biocidal Products Directive (BPD) (see the article "New Product Legislation: Its Effects on Pet Care Products and Accessories", published in the February 2004 issue of Pets international Magazine). Arch, as a global expert in antibacterial technology, is ideally qualified to meet this need.

Arch's antibacterials have already been adopted in a number of pet hygiene products aimed towards the cat and dog and other small animals, including bathing wipes, flea and tick sprays, and deodorant sprays, for both the animal and its environment. Based on these success stories (see the article 'Keeping Pets and People Healthy' on page XXX), coupled to a proven track-record of success in the field of human hygiene, and now with an expanded range of antibacterial treatment products, Arch is further developing its capabilities in the field of pet hygiene products, and is looking forward to further innovations in various product types.

Arch has the clear goal of creating products that help make people's lives better, safer and healthier. This can be seen in a range of consumer-focused hygiene products, where Arch provides specialised antimicrobial agents to the world's leading brand companies across the personal care, cosmetics and household products sectors. Arch technologies are used in antidandruff shampoos, contact lens solutions, deodorants, moist wipes for skin cleansing, and a variety of surface cleaning sprays.

Arch's guiding principles of superior product development, product stewardship and customer support, applied to human hygiene products, is now being extended to products targeted for domestic pets and their owners. The antibacterial products from Arch have proven efficacy in various applications, with data available from over 20 years of use. These antibacterials are available throughout the world, can be formulated into a diverse range of product categories, and so provide performance benefits to both pet and owner.

Headquartered in Norwalk, Connecticut, USA, Arch Chemicals Inc. is a dynamic, global specialty chemical company with a heritage of innovation, unsurpassed customer service and superior technical support, with $1 billion in annual sales. Together with its subsidiaries, Arch has approximately 3,000 employees, and manufacturing and customer support facilities in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Arch was founded in 1999 when Olin Corporation spun off its specialty chemicals business as Arch Chemicals. In April of this year, Arch acquired the Biocides business of Avecia, including Avecia's Protection & Hygiene business, which was a leading innovator in the realm of consumer-focused health and hygiene applications. This acquisition of Avecia Biocides makes Arch a world leading manufacturer and supplier of antimicrobials, and provides opportunities for Arch to expand its product offerings into new, targeted health and hygiene markets.

Due to the experience and skills available within Arch, advice can be provided over the suitability of Arch's antibacterial products for a given application. Arch offers a range of antimicrobials, including Cosmocil™ CQ, Vantocil™ TG and Proxel™ GXL.
